Blue Sky Garage Doors

You’re planning to build a new garage or replace your old garage door, but you’re unsure about the sizes? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered!

This guide will walk you through standard garage door sizes, from single and double to commercial and custom. You’ll also learn how sizes impact garage functionality.

By the end, you’ll be equipped to choose the right garage door size with the help of a professional installer.

Let’s dive in!

Understanding Standard Garage Door Sizes

You’ll find a variety of standard door sizes in the market, each designed to suit different types of vehicles and spatial needs. The size of the garage door can significantly influence your home’s curb appeal, functionality, and value.

So, how do you choose the right door size for your garage?

Let’s start with single garage doors. These are perfect for homes with a compact garage space or a single car. The standard size for single garage doors is typically 8 to 9 feet (or 10 feet) wide and 7 to 8 feet high. They’re just the right size to accommodate a car, SUV, or a small truck.

However, door sizes can be customized if your vehicle is larger or if you have storage needs. You might opt for a larger single door, or even double doors. It’s essential to measure your garage space accurately before making a decision. Remember, it’s not just about fitting your car in, but also about easy movement around it.

Understanding door sizes for a garage can help you make a well-informed decision and ensure that your garage meets your specific needs.

Single Garage Door Dimensions

When it comes to the dimensions of a single garage door, you’ll typically find them to be 8 to 9 feet wide and 7 to 8 feet high. This size is the standard for most residential homes, designed to accommodate a single car or small truck. It’s crucial to note that these measurements are the size of the opening, not the residential garage door itself.

If you’re planning to install a new garage door, you’ve got to ensure these dimensions suit your needs. Remember, it’s not just about the width and the height; you also need to consider the depth of your garage. You’ll need enough room for the vehicle, plus extra space for storage or movement.

Bear in mind that while these are the typical dimensions, they’re not set in stone. If you’ve got a larger vehicle or need more storage space, you might opt for a larger size. Customized size options are always available too. Ultimately, you must ensure that your garage door dimensions meet your specific requirements and fit into the overall structure of your home.

Double Garage Door Measurements

In terms of double garage door measurements, it’s important to note that the standard size is typically 16 feet wide and 7 to 8 feet high. This is because double garages are designed to fit two vehicles side by side, so they need to be wider than a standard single garage door.

To visualize the size of a standard double garage door, consider the following:

1. It’s as wide as an average sized bedroom.

2. The door height is about the same as the height of a standard door in your house, plus a foot or two.

3. It’s big enough to fit a small recreational vehicle or a boat.

However, it’s essential to remember that these measurements aren’t set in stone. They can vary depending on your specific needs or the design of your garage. For example, if you have a larger vehicle or need more room for storage, you may choose a larger door.

Whatever your needs, it’s crucial to measure carefully before installation to ensure your new door fits perfectly. After all, a well-fitted garage door isn’t just practical, it adds to the visual appeal of your home.

Commercial Door Sizes for Garages

During your search for a commercial garage door, it’s important to understand that standard sizes typically range from 24 to 32 feet in width and 12 to 16 feet (or 18 feet) in height. This size is ideal for accommodating large vehicles, such as trucks and trailers. Remember, the size of your door can directly impact the functionality of your commercial space, so you’ll need to choose wisely based on your specific needs.

When it comes to selecting the right door size, don’t just consider the vehicles that’ll be using the garage, but also factor in the room needed for safe and efficient operation. A door that’s too small might make it challenging to maneuver large vehicles in and out, while one that’s too large could be an unnecessary expense.

Custom sizes are also available if standard dimensions don’t fit your requirements. You can order doors that are wider or taller, ensuring that your commercial garage can accommodate any special needs. However, bear in mind that custom sizes often come at a higher cost.

Custom Size Garage Doors

Now that you’ve considered standard door sizes, it’s time to delve into the realm of custom size garage doors. Custom doors offer you the flexibility to design a garage door that fits your specific needs, be it for a unique property or an unusual architectural design. They’re not just about fitting into awkward spaces; they’re also about meeting your aesthetic preferences and functionality requirements.

1. Size and Shape

The beauty of custom size garage doors is that they can be designed to fit any size and shape. They’re perfect for those unconventional spaces where standard doors just won’t work.

2. Material and Design

Whether you prefer steel, wood, or fiberglass, you’re free to choose the material that best suits your home’s style. You can also select from a range of designs, be it a modern, minimalist look or a traditional, carriage-house style.

3. Added Features

Want windows in your door or need added insulation? With custom doors, you can incorporate these features and more.

Size Impact on Garage Functionality

Without the right garage door size, you’ll likely face issues with your garage’s functionality. It’s not just about aesthetics, the size of your garage door can significantly affect how you use your garage.

For instance, if you’ve a small door, you might struggle to park larger vehicles inside. You could also have difficulty storing larger items like boats or pieces of machinery.

On the other hand, an overly large door might seem like a good idea for access, but it can also lead to wasted space, higher heating costs, and can even compromise the structural integrity of your garage.

Your garage door’s size also impacts the type of garage door opener you can use. Some openers are designed for smaller doors and may not work efficiently with a larger one. This could lead to slower opening times and increased wear on the opener.

Avi came out personally to look at my broken garage door that has been that way for almost a year now. I have been hesitant to address the issue as two different companies had told me that I needed to replace my entire garage door and spend well over $4000.00. Avi showed up promptly (and texted me with his exact ETA), then proceeded to fix my garage door. This was something that I was told was impossible and I had resigned myself to never having a functioning door again. I now have a working garage door and I paid less than $200.00! I’m so pleased that he was able to fix a problem that I thought was unfixable and not break the bank to do it. Blue Sky Garage Doors is great, extremely honest and knowledgeable. They will be my new garage specialists from now on. Highly recommended!
